Set up your household

Once you've signed in as the owner, bring everyone else in. It all happens in Settings › People, which only admins and the owner see.

Choose an account for each person

Account What they get
Admin Runs the server with the owner: people, domains and updates.
Adult Their own apps, files and Jethro.
Child Only what a parent shares with them. No Jethro or other Sols.
Guest Only what's shared with them, until a date you choose.

There's only ever one owner.

Invite adults and admins

  1. Open Settings › People and choose Invite.
  2. Add their name and email address if you like, and choose Adult or Admin under Account.
  3. Choose Make invite, then send them the link. If your server can send email, Solel emails it to them too.

They choose their own username and password from the link. Each link works once, for a week. Until it's used, it's listed under Invites waiting, where Take back stops it working.

Add children and guests

  1. In Settings › People, choose Add someone.
  2. Enter their name and a username, and choose Child or Guest under Account.
  3. For a child, tick at least one parent. For a guest, choose the date the account works until. Guests usually stay a week.
  4. Give them a first password of at least 10 characters, and tell them in person. Choose Add.

You can add adults and admins this way too, if you'd rather choose their username yourself.

Make groups

Everyone on the server is always in Everyone, the built-in group. To share with fewer people, choose Add a group, name it (Kids, say) and tick who's in it. Each group has a space in Files, and whoever joins gets what's shared with it. See Your space and shared spaces.

Set the household rules

Further down Settings › People, Household rules sets what everyone may do:

  • Two-factor sign-in: require an authenticator app or a passkey for nobody, admins or everyone.
  • Adults can install apps for themselves.
  • Adults can share public links to files and folders.
  • Adults can make their own Sols.
  • Private access: adults can add their phones and laptops to reach the server when they're away. See Reach home when you're out.

Admins and the owner can always do all of these. Children and guests never install apps, share public links or make Sols.

Changing things later

Choose someone in the list to change their account, reset their password, clear their second steps or turn their account off. People: adults, children and guests and Household rules cover every option.
