Opening a session

Each session is a login shell on your server, as the account the owner chose. Here's how to open one and get around in it.

Open a session

  1. Open Terminal from the dock, or press Ctrl Alt T. It asks Open a terminal on the server? straight away. If you've closed that, choose Open a terminal.
  2. Prove it's you, one of two ways:
    • Enter Your Solel password and the Code from your authenticator app, then choose Open terminal.
    • Or choose Use your passkey instead, and give your passkey its PIN or your fingerprint.

The box says which server account the shell runs as, and whether it can use sudo. If sessions are recorded, it tells you that too.

For a few minutes after you prove it's you, another session opens without asking again.

If Terminal says you can't open one, see Who can use it.

Tabs and side by side

  • Each session is a tab. Choose New session to open another. You can have up to 4 open.
  • On a wide window, choose Split side by side to see two sessions at once.
  • Close a tab, or choose End this session from the More menu, to end it. Whatever is running in it stops.
  • Closing the Terminal window ends all its sessions.

Working in a session

  • Find searches what the session has shown.
  • Copy everything it showed copies all of it.
  • Bigger text and Smaller text change the size.
  • Pasting more than one line asks first, since each line runs as soon as it lands. You can choose Paste as one line instead.
  • Ctrl Alt T and the desktop's other Ctrl Alt shortcuts still work. Every other key goes to the shell.

On a phone, a row of extra keys sits above the keyboard: Esc, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, a few symbols, the arrows, Home, End and Paste.

If the connection drops

If the connection drops, or you reload the desktop, a session waits 30 seconds for you to come back, then ends. Come back in time and your open sessions return as tabs, showing where they were.

A session shows on one device at a time. Open it on another and it moves there; the first one says This session is open somewhere else, with Bring it here to take it back.

When a session ends

A session ends when the shell exits, when nothing is typed for the owner's idle time (15, 30 or 60 minutes), or after 8 hours whatever happens. It also ends if someone ends it from Settings › Terminal, Terminal is turned off, or you sign out. What it showed stays in its tab until you close it, with Copy what it showed and New session.
