Browsing for children

Browser stays off for a child until a parent turns it on. This page is for parents and admins: how to choose what a child can open, and how their asks and downloads reach you.

Where the controls are

Open Settings › Browser. Under Children is a card for each child you look after: your own children, or every child if you're an admin. A child's parents are set in their account; see People: adults, children and guests.

Turn it on

  1. Open Settings › Browser and find the child's card.
  2. Under What … can open, which shows the child's first name, choose:
    • Nothing keeps Browser off for them. This is where every child starts.
    • Only sites you choose opens the sites in Always allowed and nothing else. They can ask you for more.
    • Filtered web leaves out adult and gambling sites, from lists kept on your server.
  3. Choose Add a site to add sites that always open, like school.example. Its subdomains, like www.school.example, open too.

Safe search stays on for Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and YouTube whichever you choose.

Rules

  • Parents can see the sites … visits is on to begin with. The child is told, and you see site names and times only, never what they type. The card lists the sites they opened in the last 30 days. Turning it off clears that list.
  • Downloads always wait for your OK.
  • Browsing hours limits pages to between two times, like 07:00 to 20:30, on your server's clock. Outside them, nothing opens. Hours can run overnight.
  • Private tabs are never on for a child.

A child also can't save passwords in Browser or open pages on your home network.

Asks and downloads

When a page doesn't open, the child sees why. If it's not on their list, or the filter blocked it, they can choose Ask a parent. Their parents get a notification, and the ask shows on the child's card under Waiting for you:

  • Allow adds the site to Always allowed. It opens for them straight away, and they're told.
  • Not now says no for now. They can ask again later.

A file a child downloads waits on the server until you answer. Choose Save to their Files to put it in their Downloads, or Not now to discard it.

Notifications go to the child's parents. An admin who isn't their parent can still answer on the card. See Notifications for how they reach you.
