Sign in with Google or Microsoft

Gmail and Outlook accounts can connect to Mail by signing in with Google or Microsoft, so you don't need an app password. Mail keeps the sign-in on your server and never sees your password.

  1. In Mail, press Connect an account, and choose Gmail or Outlook.
  2. Press Sign in with Google, or Sign in with Microsoft. A window opens.
  3. The first time you sign in from your server, the window asks whether it's your own Solel. Check the address is your server's, then press Continue.
  4. Sign in to Google or Microsoft, and allow Mail to read and send your mail.
  5. Back in Mail, it says Signed in as, with your address. Choose how much to Bring in, then press Connect.

If the window gets lost behind another, press Open it again.

How it works

On its way back to your server, the window passes through a page on solel.io. That page only sees a one-time code, which is no use without the proof your server keeps. Mail then keeps the sign-in, locked, on your server.

For Gmail, Mail's requests to Google for a fresh sign-in go through a relay at solel.io, which adds Solel's own registration with Google on the way and keeps nothing.

When it asks you to sign in again

Mail stays signed in until you sign it out on Google's or Microsoft's side. If that happens, the account says it needs you to sign in again.

  1. In Mail, open Settings.
  2. Find the account's section.
  3. Press Sign in again, and sign in as before.

An account that uses an app password can switch the same way: press Sign in in its section.

Rather use an app password? Press Use an app password instead when you connect. See Add an email account.
