Reading and tidying up
Mail shows your mail as conversations, with quick ways to clear your Inbox without losing anything. Most actions show Undo for a moment afterwards.
The Inbox
Inbox brings together new mail from all your accounts, sorted into tabs: Primary, Updates, Promotions and Social. Mail from people you've written to, or who are in your contacts, goes to Primary. To move a sender's mail to another tab from now on, drag a conversation onto the tab, or choose the tab in More actions. You can turn tabs off in Mail's Settings, under Inbox.
The number beside Inbox, also on Mail's icon in the dock, is your unread mail.
Reading
A conversation reads like a chat, with messages you've read folded to one line. Click one to open it. Pictures from the internet stay hidden until you press Show pictures, unless you've written to the sender, so senders can't tell you've opened their mail.
Mail from a mailing list has Unsubscribe beside the sender. Save to Files on an attachment keeps it in Files, in a folder called Mail.
Clearing your Inbox
- Archive (e) takes a conversation out of the Inbox and keeps it in Archive.
- Move to Trash (#) puts it in Trash.
- Flag (s) keeps it in Flagged to come back to.
- Snooze hides it until Later today, Tomorrow, This weekend, Next week or a time you choose. Then it comes back to the top of your Inbox, unread. A reply brings it back sooner.
- Mute (m), in More actions, archives the conversation and keeps its replies out of your Inbox.
To act on several at once, select them by their pictures, then use the bar above the list. On a phone, swipe a conversation right to archive it or left to move it to Trash, and pull the list down to check for new mail.
Junk and blocking
Choose Block, with the sender's name, in More actions, and their mail goes to Junk from now on. To unblock someone, find them under Blocked senders in Mail's Settings.
If good mail ends up in Junk, open it and press Not junk to move it back to the Inbox. Most mail services learn from this.
Folders
Make a folder with the + beside Folders, or choose Move to a new folder in More actions. Drag conversations onto a folder to file them. Rename or delete a folder from its menu. Deleting one moves its mail to Archive first. Gmail keeps labels rather than folders, so Gmail accounts don't offer this.
Keys and your Sol
Press ? to see every key Mail takes. j and k move between conversations, and c starts a new message.
If you talk with Jethro or another Sol, Summarise beside the subject of a long conversation asks your Sol for its main points.
