Mailboxes for everyone
Your server can give each person a mailbox at your own domain, like asmith@example.com. looks after the domain and the mailboxes; shows them in the directory and uses them for new people, teams and leavers.
Set up the domain
An admin sets up the domain in Mail's settings, under Own addresses. Turn on An address for everyone there, and each person gets one at their username. Guests and children don't. See Your own address @yourdomain for setting it up.
In the directory
Once the domain is set up, Settings › Directory shows Addresses at your domain at the top, with how it's doing. Each person's row shows their address and, when it isn't working yet, what's happening to it:
- being made
- starts when they first sign in: a new mailbox starts working the first time its person signs in
- switching on
- already at Migadu, so Solel leaves it alone: an address of that name already exists at the mail service
- Solel is trying again: something didn't work the first time
You can search the directory by address too.
New people
When everyone gets an address, Add someone shows the address a new person will get as you type their username, like asmith@example.com. If it's taken, a number goes on the end, like asmith2@example.com. Their mailbox is made for them, and starts working when they first sign in.
Their Email address in the directory is a different thing: their own address elsewhere, where Solel sends their set-up link.
Team addresses
Give a team an address on your domain as its Team email in Settings › Teams, like design@example.com. Mail to it goes to the mailbox of everyone in the team and in the teams inside it, and follows as people join and leave.
When someone leaves
A leaver's mailbox stops sending but keeps their mail for as long as you choose, and can pass new mail on to someone else with an automatic reply. It also comes off their teams' addresses. See Leavers and the audit log.
