Updating and removing apps

Every app on your server has its own page in Settings › Apps. Open it to see how it's doing, update it, turn it off or remove it.

How an app is doing

The list in Settings › Apps shows each app's state: Running, Starting, On or Off. When something's wrong, it says so:

  • Not answering: Solel restarts it if it stays that way.
  • Stopped working: it kept stopping, so Solel stopped restarting it. Open it and choose Try again, or check for an update.
  • Couldn't start: its container couldn't be set up. Solel tries again every little while.

Admins can read an app's logs in Health.

Update an app

Apps don't update on their own. To look for a new version:

  1. Open Settings › Apps and choose the app.
  2. Choose Check for an update.

Solel fetches the app again from the address it was installed from. It tells you whether the app is up to date or which version it's on now. If the new version asks for something the old one didn't, you're asked about just that, and it isn't granted until you allow it. Everything it could use before carries over.

An app installed from a file has no address to check. Choose Install an app in Settings › Apps and pick the new version's solel-app.json under A file. It replaces the old version, keeping its data and grants. A version older than the one installed can't replace it.

To check for an update you need to be allowed to install the app: an admin for apps for everyone at home, or anyone the household lets install their own.

The apps that come with Solel are marked Comes with Solel. They're updated with itself and can't be removed; see Updates.

Turn an app off

Turn off Turned on on the app's page. It stays installed, with its data, but nobody can use it until it's turned on again.

Remove an app

  1. Open Settings › Apps and choose the app.
  2. Choose Remove….
  3. For an app that keeps things on your server, you can tick Delete what it saved too. Deleting can't be undone.
  4. Choose Remove, or Remove and delete.

An app for everyone goes for everyone at home; your own app goes from yours. If you keep its data, installing it again picks up where it left off. If you delete it, the app can't be installed again until the deleting is done.

Only admins turn off or remove apps for everyone at home. Your own apps, marked Just you, are yours to turn off or remove.
