Phones and laptops

Settings › Phones and laptops does two things for your devices: private access to Solel from anywhere, with nothing open to the internet, and calendars and contacts that sync with your phone's own apps. For a step-by-step guide, see Reach home when you're out.

Away from home

Adults, admins and the owner see this part, not children or guests. It needs an admin to turn on private access and set where devices connect, in Settings › Network. If the server was started without it, the page says "Private access isn't running", with the command to turn it on for admins.

  1. Choose Add a device, name it, such as Sam's phone, and choose Add device.
  2. Get the free WireGuard app on the device.
  3. In WireGuard, add a tunnel and scan the code. On a laptop, choose Download the file and import it instead.
  4. Turn the tunnel on. The dialog says when the device has connected.

The code holds the device's key and is only shown once, so keep it to yourself. If you lose it, remove the device and add it again. Only Solel goes through the tunnel; everything else on the device uses its own connection.

Each device shows as Connected or Not connected, with when it last connected. Remove… stops it reaching Solel straight away. Admins also see everyone else's devices here, and can remove them.

Phones that sync

Your calendars and contacts sync both ways with iPhone, Android, Thunderbird and most calendar apps. Each phone or app gets its own sync password, which only syncs. It can't sign in or do anything else, so a lost phone can be cut off on its own.

  1. Choose Set up a phone.
  2. Choose An iPhone or iPad, or Android, Thunderbird or another app.
  3. Name it, enter your password, and choose Continue.
  4. For an iPhone or iPad, point its camera at the code and open the link, or if you're on it already, tap Add to this iPhone. Then open Settings and tap Profile Downloaded to install it. The code works once, for 15 minutes.
  5. Anywhere else, add a CalDAV and CardDAV account with the server address, username and sync password shown. On Android, DAVx⁵ does both: choose Login with URL and user name. The password is only shown this once.

Calendars shared with you sync too. You get your own contacts and the household address book; children can see the household book but not change it, and guests don't get it. Syncing only works over HTTPS.

Remove… stops a phone syncing straight away. What's already on it stays until you remove the account on the phone too. Signing out everywhere removes every sync password. Children can't set up a phone themselves, so the page asks them to ask a parent.
