Backups and snapshots

Settings › Backups and snapshots gives you two ways back to how Solel was. Only admins and the owner see it. Snapshots come first on the page, then backups.

Which is which

Snapshots Backups
Where they live On the same drive as Solel On another disk: a second drive or a USB drive
When they're made When you take one, and before every update Every day or every week, or when you choose Back up now
How many are kept The newest 3, using up to a tenth of the disk The newest 14, unless you change it
What they save you from A bad update or a mistake A drive that fails

Both hold the same things: accounts, settings, routes, devices and activity. They don't hold anyone's files, photos or what apps save. Each one stores only what changed since the others, so most are small.

A snapshot can't help if the drive it's on fails, so it doesn't replace a backup. Set up both.

Getting back

Restoring either kind works the same way. It asks for your password and takes a snapshot of how things are now, so you can undo it. Then Solel puts the old data back and restarts, which takes a moment. If you signed in after the snapshot or backup was made, you sign in again.

  • Snapshots: take one, restore one, and how they're kept.
  • Back up to another drive: set up a drive, how each backup is checked, and getting it back after a reinstall.
