Sharing with people

You can share anything in My files with a person or a group on your server, so they can view it or edit it. Shares only ever reach people on your server. There are no public links.

Share a file or folder

  1. In My files, open the menu on a file or folder (the three dots beside it) and choose Share.
  2. Under Add a person or group, choose someone. Groups say (group) after their name, and children say (child).
  3. Beside each person, choose Can view or Can edit.
  4. Leave Send a notification to people I add ticked to let them know, or untick it.
  5. Press Done.

Sharing a folder shares everything in it too. You can also share from a file's details: choose Get info from its menu, then press Share.

Sharing with a group

A share with a group follows the group. Someone who joins it gets the share, and someone who leaves loses it. Children in a group can only view what's shared with it.

Change or stop sharing

Open Share again to change what someone can do, or press the cross beside them to take them off. Stop sharing takes everyone off at once. Shared by me, in the sidebar, lists everything you share and who with.

Sharing also stops when you move something to the Trash, or move it out of My files into another space. Moving it to another folder in My files keeps it shared.

What people you share with can do

What you share appears in their Shared with me, with your name beside it.

  • With Can view, they can open it and download it. To change it, they choose Save a copy to… and change their own copy.
  • With Can edit, they can change it and delete it too. Anything they delete goes to your Trash, where you can put it back.

Children and guests

Children can't share. A child sees a share only when a grown-up adds them or a group they're in, and they can only ever view it, even if it was shared with Can edit.

Guests have no files of their own, so what's shared with them is all they see in Files. Admins choose who's a guest in Settings › People; see People: adults, children and guests.
