The household address book

Contacts has three lists of people: your own contacts, the household's shared book, and everyone with an account on your server. This page explains each one and who can change it.

Your own contacts

All contacts is your own book. Nobody else sees it, including admins and the server's owner.

The household's book

Household, under Shared in the sidebar, is one book for the whole house: the GP, the school, the plumber.

  • Owners, admins and adults can add to it and change it.
  • Children can see it but not change it.
  • Guests don't see it.

People on this server

Everyone with an account here shows up in People on this server, without anyone adding them. Their details come from Settings › People. Guests don't see this list.

Add a contact

  1. Press New contact.
  2. If you can add to the household's book, choose where to Keep them in: My contacts or Household.
  3. Fill in their name, How you know them, phone numbers, email addresses and Birthday. Address, Website, Notes and Anniversary are there when you need them.
  4. Press Choose a picture, or leave them with their initials.
  5. Press Save.

Favourites and groups

  • Press the star on a contact to add them to Favourites. Favourites are your own, even for people in the household's book.
  • Groups, like Family or Footy club, sort people. Add someone to a group when you edit them, and the group shows up in the sidebar. Groups go to your phone with the contact.

Duplicates

When contacts look like the same person, with the same email address, phone number or full name, a note above the list offers Review and merge. Merging keeps the first one's name and adds the numbers, addresses and groups the others have. Favourites carry over. Nothing merges unless you ask.

Where your contacts show up

Mail shows people's pictures from your contacts and the household's, and suggests their addresses as you write. In Mail, Add to Contacts on someone's card puts them in your own contacts.

To send someone a contact, open it and press Share contact card. It downloads as a .vcf file, which any phone or app can open.
