Calls
A call gives a Sol's face the whole screen, and you talk instead of typing. Calls are for one Sol at a time, not group chats. This page covers how a call works, when it's typed instead, and where what you say goes.
Have a call
- In a chat with one Sol, choose the call button at the top of the chat. Its label is Call and the Sol's name.
- Choose Talk and say what you want.
- Choose it again to send what you said.
- To end the call, choose Back to the chat. On a phone, you can swipe up from the bottom instead.
Everything said on a call stays in the conversation afterwards.
During a call
- What the Sol says shows as captions, which you can hide, and is read aloud in its voice a few sentences at a time.
- Talking while the Sol is answering stops its answer.
- After 55 seconds of talking, what you've said so far is sent by itself.
- Type instead opens a box to type in.
- When the Sol needs your OK, Allow once and Don't allow show on the call too.
Each Sol's voice is chosen on its page in Genesis//ark, under Voice.
When a call is typed
A call is typed instead, without the microphone, when:
- Sols are muted on this device, with Mute on this device in Genesis//ark's settings
- Genesis//ark hasn't been allowed the microphone
- Genesis//ark is open on its own, outside the desktop.
While Sols are muted, replies aren't read aloud either.
Where what you say goes
Genesis//ark can't use the microphone itself, so the desktop records for it, and passes on only what you said between Talk and sending it.
Unless an admin chooses an online service, what you said is turned into words on your server, and nothing you say leaves your server. An admin chooses this in Settings › Sols, under Listening and speaking. With an online service, recordings of what's said and the replies to be spoken go to that service. Typed chats stay on your server either way.
The first time anyone talks to a Sol, your server downloads the speech models it needs, once. Settings › Sols shows how they're getting on. You can type on a call while they download.
