Apps and what they can reach
Settings › Apps lists the apps on this server and what each one can use. Everyone sees it; what you can change depends on your account. Apps run in their own containers, so they reach only what you allow, and an app never gets more than the person using it has.
The list
Each app shows who it's for (Comes with Solel, Everyone or Just you), how many things it can use, and how it's doing: On, Off, Starting, Running, Not answering, Stopped working or Couldn't start. An app that stopped working or couldn't start also gets a note at the top of the page.
Install an app
Admins install for everyone or just themselves. Adults install for themselves when the household rule allows it.
- Choose Install an app.
- Under From, choose Its address and paste the address of its solel-app.json, starting with https://, or choose A file and pick the solel-app.json.
- If you're an admin, choose who it's for: Everyone at home or Just me.
- Choose Next. You see what it wants to use, and allow each thing on its own, before anything is installed.
An app installed from its address can be updated from it later. One installed from a file is updated by installing the new version's file.
One app's page
Choose an app to open its page.
- Turned on: off keeps it installed, with its data, but nobody can use it.
- What it can use: a switch for each thing it asked for. Changes take effect straight away.
- About: its version, who made it, who it's for, when and where it was installed, and its address if it has one.
- Check for an update, for an app installed from its address. Only what the new version asks for that the old one didn't is asked again.
- Remove…. For an app that keeps its own data, you can delete what it saved too; otherwise that stays, and installing it again picks up where it left off.
Apps that come with Solel are updated with Solel and can't be removed. An app an admin installed for everyone can only be changed by an admin. For more, see What an app can reach and Updating and removing apps.
Children's requests
A child's button reads Ask for an app. Their parents, and admins, see each request under Asked for: choose what the app may use, then install it for them or say no. The child gets a notification either way. A child can take a permission away from their own app, but only a parent gives one.
Apps that sign in with Solel
Admins also see Apps that sign in with Solel: apps running elsewhere at home, such as a photo or media server, that use Solel accounts. Connect an app gives one a client ID and secret. It needs Solel's address set in Settings › Network, and it runs with the router: if the router isn't running, this group says so and gives the command that turns it on. See Sign in with Solel.
