Terminal access

Settings › Terminal turns on a shell on the server itself, from your desktop or phone. Only the owner sees this page and changes it. Terminal is off until the owner turns it on, and it asks for your password every time it opens. To use it, see Opening a session.

With Terminal on, someone who gets into your Solel account can run anything on the server.

Turn it on

Terminal needs an authenticator app or a passkey on the owner's account; until there's one, the page offers Set it up, which opens Sign-in and security. It only works over HTTPS, private access, or on the server itself.

  1. In Settings › Terminal, turn Terminal on.
  2. Enter your password and choose Turn on.

Every change on this page asks for your password. The Helper, which runs the shells, starts and shows Running. Turning Terminal off closes every open session straight away.

Settings

  • Runs as: an account on the server, not a Solel one. Root is there, but an account that can use sudo is safer. Sessions open now keep the account they started as.
  • Who can use it: Only me or Me and admins. It starts on Only me. Adults, children and guests never can, and nor can apps, API keys or Sols. See Who can use it.
  • Close after: 15, 30 or 60 minutes with nothing typed. It starts at 15. No session lasts longer than 8 hours.
  • Record sessions: keeps what the screen showed, not what was typed, so passwords typed at a prompt aren't saved. Recordings are kept 30 days, and only you can watch them. It starts off.
  • Tell me when a session opens: when one opens from a device you haven't used it on before, or when an admin opens one. It starts on.

Recent sessions

Each session shows who opened it, on which device, when, for how long, as which account and from where, and whether it was recorded. End it stops an open session, and Watch plays back a recorded one. Changes to Terminal and refused tries are listed too, and everything is also in Activity. See What's kept.
