Solel//dev docs

When it won't start

When the desktop won't open, start on the server itself. These commands assume is in /opt/solel, where the installer puts it.

See what's running

cd /opt/solel
sudo docker compose ps

Each service should show as up. If some aren't, start every part, Jethro and the Sols included:

sudo docker compose --profile genesis up -d

Then ask Solel whether it's answering:

curl -s http://127.0.0.1:8080/api/health

A working server answers with "ok":true, its version, and whether it's in safe mode.

Read the logs

sudo docker compose logs core
sudo docker compose logs caddy

The core's log usually says what stopped it. Caddy's is for problems with addresses and certificates. To watch the AI model download on its first start:

sudo docker compose logs -f models

Common causes

  • Docker isn't running. Start it with sudo systemctl start docker, then start again as above.
  • A port is taken. needs ports 80, 443 and 8080. Stop whatever else is using them.
  • The drive is full. When space runs out, Solel and its apps can't save anything. df -h shows what's free.
  • Jethro isn't answering yet. The first start downloads the model, which takes a while. Everything else works in the meantime.
  • An update didn't take. If a new version doesn't come up healthy within three minutes, Solel puts the one before back by itself. Settings › Updates says so, and you can try again from there.

When one part isn't running

If runs but was started without one of its parts, Settings says so where that part is used. Admins see the command that turns it on, ready to copy, and a How to turn it on link. Run it from /opt/solel:

Settings says Command
The router isn't running (Network) sudo docker compose up -d caddy core
Private access isn't running (Phones and laptops) sudo docker compose up -d caddy tunnel core
The model runtime isn't running (Models) sudo docker compose --profile genesis up -d

Then choose Check again.

Start in safe mode

When an app is causing the trouble, safe mode starts with every app off, so you can turn off or remove the one at fault. Apps and their data are kept.

If you can open the desktop, an admin chooses Restart in safe mode in Settings › Health. It stays in safe mode, across restarts too, until an admin chooses Leave safe mode there.

If you can't open the desktop, start the core in safe mode from the server:

cd /opt/solel
sudo SOLEL_SAFE_MODE=true docker compose up -d core

Started this way, it stays in safe mode until you start the core again without the setting:

sudo docker compose up -d core

While it's in safe mode, you can also restore a snapshot from Settings › Backups and snapshots. See Health and safe mode and Snapshots.
